Community Action for Fresh Water (CAFW) is the flagship initiative of Rotary’s partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Through this initiative, Rotary and Rotaract members work with their local communities and partners to protect, restore, and sustain freshwater ecosystems in alignment with the environmental area of focus.So how does that translate locally to NZ and particularly to Christchurch?This is done in several ways, Rotary Clubs throughout the South Island under District 9999 are working with their respective communities.In Christchurch local clubs are Working with the Styx Living Laboratory Trust (SLLT) developing learning and research in the Pūharakekenui (Styx) River catchment, a spring-fed ecosystem on the northern edge of the city. Courtney Reid, Education Officer for SLLT outlined the involvement of Rotary clubs in the School Biodiversity Education Project whereby funding is provided to participating schools in their area to allow free transport, morning tea and lunch for the attendees. Also speaking at our Monday meeting was Prawindra Mukhia lead for CAFW D9999 and member of Rotary Club of Riccarton who overviewed the role of CAFW. Tanya Jenkins a member of Ferrymead Rotary outlined her involvement in the environmental field as a Education Consultant since 1995. She is currently employed as a part-time manager for the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust.
